Carpentry and millwork repair

The trade that fixes the things customers lean on: a counter edge coming apart, shelving pulling out of the wall, a partition that needs moving, trim damaged by a delivery cart, a door that has to be hung to fit a frame that has settled. Work covers finish carpentry and millwork, stud partitions and framing repairs, fitting and hanging doors, and building the fixtures a fit-out either never included or has worn out.

What carpentry and millwork repair costs

Most of these jobs land near $700. The full spread runs $250 to $9,000, and the gap between those two ends is diagnosis against replacement rather than one business being dearer than another.

What moves it: how much of the job is parts, whether the fault is found in the first hour or the third, access to the equipment, and the hour of the day you call. We never speak to the businesses listed here, so there is no rate card behind any of this. It is our own band for the category, and there is no regional index: the figure does not change with your metro.

Who is licensed to do this work

In California the classification that squarely covers this is C-5 framing and rough carpentry or C-6 cabinet, millwork and finish carpentry, and the register says who holds it. Every listing on this site shows the classification, the license number and the date we read it, with a link back to the register entry so you can check it against the state rather than against us.

Overlapping classifications exist and are labeled as overlapping rather than as a match: B general building. A general building contractor may hold the job and subcontract the trade, which is a real answer and a different one, so the card says which of the two you are looking at.

One thing worth being plain about: CSLB classifications do not distinguish commercial work from residential. There is no separate commercial license to hold and no register field that would prove one. That is why this page describes the equipment rather than the contractor, and why nothing here says a business has been checked out. We read a public record on a stated date. That is the whole claim.

Before you pay for a callout

Two minutes of checks that sometimes end the problem

We would rather you did not need a callout at all. These are the checks that end the most calls for this fault.

Try a quick fix first

Some issues resolve without a truck roll. Two minutes now can save the callout.

  1. 1

Photograph the piece and include something for scale. Carpentry prices depend on the material and the size, and a photograph gets you a usable number before anyone drives out.

  2. 2

Check what is behind the wall before you ask for shelving. Anything carrying weight needs to reach studs or proper fixings, and that is why the cheap version fails.

  3. 3

Batch it. Trim, a wobbly counter and two shelves in one visit is one trip charge instead of three.

  4. 4

Say if the fixture has to match existing work. Matching a finish or a profile is most of the skill and it belongs in the conversation up front.

What the visit actually includes

  • Removal of the damaged or failed section
  • New timber or sheet material fitted and finished
  • Fixings appropriate to what the item has to carry
  • Door hanging, easing and hardware transfer where that is the job
  • Site cleared and waste removed

Diagnosis

How carpentry faults usually present

Written from how these faults actually present on a working premises, not from a manual.

Pattern 1

Shelving pulls out of the wall again

Fixed into board rather than into studs or with the wrong anchor. It is the same failure every time, and it is a fixing choice rather than a materials one.

Pattern 2

Counter edge lifting where it gets wet

An unsealed edge next to a sink or a coffee machine. Replacing it without sealing the new edge buys you the same repair next year.

Carpentry and millwork repair near you

Local pages show which businesses are listed for that metro, how far out they sit, and the local conditions that drive demand.

Counted from the businesses we have imported for each metro center inside a 25 mile radius, and counting only those whose own license classification names this trade. General contractors licensed widely enough to take it on and subcontract it are excluded here, and still appear in a search. A metro reads “none yet” until we load a register that covers this trade there.

Questions owners ask

Carpentry FAQs

Short, specific answers. If yours is not here, ask the business you call before you agree to the visit.

Find local trades
What license does carpentry need in California?
C-6 cabinet, millwork and finish carpentry, or C-5 framing and rough carpentry for structural work. A B General Building contractor genuinely performs both, so B appears here as a partial match behind the specialists.
Can this be done outside trading hours?
Most of it, yes, and it usually should be. Cutting timber on a shop floor during service is noisy and dusty, and cutting outside or off site is normal practice.
Is a damaged fire door a carpentry job?
Only partly. A fire door is a certified assembly, and planing or patching one can void its rating. Say it is a fire door when you call, because the correct answer is often replacement rather than repair.
